White Clouds Above the Trellis - For a wisp of cloud and a whiff of breeze

This project is located in a challenging urban environment surrounded by buildings. We design it with natural lighting from directly above, which brings in the ever-changing sky. The space opens to the existing passages between buildings to access airflow and alleviate the stifling heat trapped in the space.

The main space accommodates work, reading, entertainment, and other functions. To serve the multiple purposes in the insufficient space in the trapezoid structure, we place one long table as the center of all main activities, which take place in the u-shaped area that surrounds the table. On the edge of the activity area, a three-tier open and closed storage and display structure corresponds to the activities at the main table.

With the 7.2-meter ceiling height, we stacked a new, floating volume, which, reflected in the framed view of the facade, creates a gaze that naturally merges the sky with living space.

On the principles of simplicity and economy, two special materials were used in this project. One is unprocessed plywood. In regular wood construction, plywood is generally used as a substrate, and the pattern and color choices have to be made at the manufacturing stage to modify the course quality with coating. The other is the elevated walkway to the mezzanine. Standard grid-style ditch covers are used to ensure light permeability.

When clouds and breeze become one with the space, time is driven by the excitement under the trellis, and life begins.
