Three Walls, Two People, and One Cat

The main purpose of the project is to allow the client to curate a large collection of books and music while accommodating a range of activities in a multi-purpose space.

Three walls are installed in the space. The first wall is a book wall that crosses the public space from the foyer to the end of the interior. With the concept of “super furniture,” which consolidate multiple purposes into single objects, the book wall come with seats that also serve as storage spaces. In the middle are sofas, and toward the foyer are shoe cabinets and shoe stools that accommodate sitting, reclining, and other reading positions to generate interaction with the book wall. The undulating laminated boards, on the other hand, create a playground for the household cat, allowing more interaction between the cat and the residents.

The second wall is in the middle of the public space and is variable. Considering that the French windows at the end of the space are the main source of natural lighting, to ensure lighting and maintain the flexibility of the space, a large 180-degree revolving cabinet is installed. On one side is a screen, and on the other is a removable magazine rack. The cabinet serves different purposes in different scenarios, sometimes partitioning spaces while at other times allowing spaces to overlap. On visual and acoustic levels, it makes the boundaries among the living room, the dining room, and the study more flexible.

The third wall is between the public space (the study) and the private space (the bedroom). On the side of the study, the book collection must be symbiotic with the placement of the piano; on the side of the bedroom, there need to be nightstands and storage cabinets. A combination of cabinet systems creates a double-sided cabinet as a solution to serve both storage and space-saving needs.
