Clouds at Sunset

Peaceful Days in Mountain Mist

From above Linkou, we see the city surrounded by mist at a vaguely defined distance. In the river of mist, not even our fingers are visible. The river floats the city and drowns the busy streets beneath our feet and the hustle of the city in the distance. Through the flowing mist, we peek at the shining clouds above the horizon at sunset.

Pavilion and Terrace Combined

With a larger-scale living space, we abandon the idea of partitioning spaces with walls. Instead, we adopt the concept of “a house within a house” as a volume within the space. From the perspective of the owners, we redefined spatial arrangements with the floating, closed terrace and the open living pavilion, each independent from the other in the space. Meanwhile, the present and absent volumes interact with each other through the mediating hall.

Layer onto Layer

From the opening that face the vast mist and clouds to the interior hall and the open pavilion, we use rhythmic partitioning. Natural divisions transition to dense lines. This structure creates three-dimensional layers that blends the sociable activities indoors into the elegance of the mist in the mountains and forest.

Fusing with Nature

Texture of stone and pattern of ripples: For the textures in the space, we use large natural stone tablets cut rhythmically and create a ripple pattern by hand using trowels. It is our aim to naturally reflect mist, clouds, and rocks onto life in the mountains.
